A Gentle Way to Strengthen Your Core and Pelvic Floor
If you’re struggling with pelvic floor weakness, postural issues, core instability, or discomfort after pregnancy, hypopressives offer a gentle yet powerful way to restore balance and strength from the inside out.
Our chiropractor Rachel Jones offers one-to-one and small group sessions to help you safely learn and experience the benefits of this innovative technique.
What Are Hypopressives?
Hypopressives are a series of postural and breathing exercises designed to reduce pressure inside the abdomen while activating the deep core and pelvic floor muscles.
Unlike traditional abdominal exercises (such as crunches or planks), which increase intra-abdominal pressure, hypopressives train your body to reflexively engage the muscles that support your spine, pelvis, and organs - without strain.
A session typically includes:
• Specific breathing techniques (including gentle breath-holds or “apnoea”)
• Postural alignment to lift and lengthen the body
• Controlled abdominal “vacuum” exercises
• Relaxation and focus on body awareness
The result is improved posture, stability and pelvic support — while relieving pressure on the lower back and pelvic floor.
Who Can Benefit from Hypopressives?
Hypopressives are suitable for almost anyone and can be adapted to your comfort and ability.
They may be especially helpful for:
• Postpartum recovery – helping to restore abdominal tone, improve bladder control and support healing from mild diastasis recti.
• Pelvic floor weakness or prolapse – gently improving tone and reducing downward pressure.
• Back or pelvic pain – by improving spinal alignment and deep core stability.
• People with poor posture or desk-based jobs – promoting balance and breathing awareness.
• Athletes and active individuals – enhancing performance, breath control, and stability.
• Anyone seeking a gentle, mindful way to move and reconnect with their body.
The Benefits of Hypopressives
Regular practice of hypopressives can help to:
• Improve posture and spinal alignment
• Strengthen deep core and pelvic floor muscles
• Reduce pressure contributing to prolapse or incontinence
• Support recovery after pregnancy
• Increase breathing efficiency and awareness
• Relieve tension in the abdomen, pelvis, and lower back
Hypopressives is a fabulous complementary therapy - an evidence-informed, low-impact approach to core and pelvic rehabilitation.
