…….babies, toddlers and older children

Many parents seek the specific professional assistance of Anne Matthews, for their children who may have a variety of difficulties from

  • biomechanical associated postural problems (such as common aches and pains)
    an inability to sit or stand still for a period of time;
  • clumsy and tripping;
  • lack of focus and behavioural issues;
  • problems around anxiety and settling to sleep;
  • issues around fussy eating, constipation and toileting;
  • complaints of babies described as having ‘colic like pain’
  • unsettled newborns with bottle and breast feeding difficulties

and those babies whose parents may describe as having had a challenged birth experience.

Anne Matthews’ specific treatment style for children

Anne intuitively integrates her therapeutic skills from the areas of Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Cranio-sacral Therapy, Pre & Perinantal Education, Baby Therapy and from Child Development to assess a child’s needs and prescribe a program of treatment individually tailored for each child.

Anne also uses her techniques empathetically in order to counsel and guide parents whilst empowering them in understanding and managing their child from a more informed and profound point of view.

Chiropractic treatment styles specific for children

The techniques for treating children are different from those used when treating adults. Firstly, a case history is taken from both parent/s and child (where appropriate) in order to establish both the main and secondary areas of concern. Parents are guided to having a greater understanding of their childs’ spinal, pelvic and limb alignment and cranial patterns, by, for example, viewing their childs’ regular posture in standing or lying. A variety of non invasive physical, orthopaedic and neurological examinations are discreetly performed with both the parents’ and childs’ consent.

During the treatment process our Chiropractors use gentle stretching and mobilizing techniques to correct spinal and pelvic mis-alignments and they also will direct parents on home care and neuro-developmental exercises to assist a child’s physical development.

Our Chiropractors will also discuss the issues around postural strain at home and at school, especially regarding the playing of electronic devices, computer games and carrying school bags.

We aim to take a full history of the pregnancy and birth. Of interest is the position of the baby in the womb, if it was in a breech or transverse position and, if so, for how long. It is also important to know about your child presently, such as how well he/she sleeps, feeds and his/her general wellbeing. As babies are unable to tell us with words, we find out by enquiring about their behaviour and daily routines. A lot of information can be ascertained at this stage.

The examination
During the examination, the postural and muscular tension is assessed, as well as the individual and global movement of the body, spine and neck. Particular attention is put on spinal mobility and alignment. The head shape and symmetry of the cranial bones are evaluated. For issues with feeding difficulties, the sucking reflex, jaw and mouth muscles will be assessed. The abdomen and diaphragm will be examined for tension and congestion. The hips, knees and feet will be examined and tested for alignment and stability. The examination may vary for babies and children due to their age and development.

The treatment
If treatment is recommended is very gentle and always with the co-operation of the baby or child. Some babies sleep through the session and we make every effort to make it comfortable for them and they may sometimes lie on a bean bag for comfort and relaxation. We also encourage both parents to join us during the treatment.

Progress and treatment response
During the treatment sessions we will always enquire about the progress and evaluate their postural and mechanical changes. We may offer advice on nutrition, sleeping positions, car seats of exercises and work alongside GPs, specialists and health visitors where necessary. We encourage you as a parent to ask us as many questions as possible and let us know of any changes that has occurred so that we can help you to the best of our ability with the treatment.

There is evidence that adolescents often have undiagnosed health problems. Common types of presentations are related to musculoskeletal health due to over- or under-physical training, sports or road traffic accidents or problems related to rapid growth such as scoliosis and joint hypermobility and other spinal and limb pain syndromes.

Adolescence is a profound time to influence health promotion and self care for long-term dis-ease prevention. Our Chiropractors offer advice from retraining and strengthening the muscles of the spine and pelvis to self care stretching and massage techniques. The emphasis is on directing and empowering the young person to have a greater understanding of managing their physical body and to use massage and relaxation techniques for rebalancing their body and assisting them with reducing their stress levels.

Children with Neuro-Developmental Delay

This term refers to children who have not met a collection of their regular childhood milestones within a given time range.

Those children who have had a general diagnosis of Neuro-Developmental Delay and perhaps coupled with learning difficulties and specifically Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder, Dyslexic, Dyspraxic – are not treated directly for these conditions – but commonly, however, children presenting with these conditions respond well to the rebalancing effect of the specific combination of therapeutic skills offered by our experienced Principal Chiropractor, Anne Matthews. The treatment techniques used are a combination of skills Anne has acquired from extensive post graduate study over Anne’s 25 years in practice at the Belfast Chiropractic Clinic.
